My Experience

As an East Van local, I had definitely heard a lot about Hootsuite’s reputation in Canadian tech. I thought it was really cool to have the opportunity to work for a big tech company with headquarters within walking distance of my house. I came to Hootsuite because I wanted to try something different from my last co-op terms: I was interested in working for a larger company, and getting a taste of full stack web dev. And despite the fact that Hootsuite is around 30 times bigger than any company I’ve worked for before, it was just as friendly and welcoming.

During my four months at Hootsuite, I definitely learned a lot about agile-based software dev processes and polished my technical chops. It has now been 8 months and counting since I last accidentally overwrote someone else’s code with git, and to my own shock and horror, I have actually come to appreciate some features of JavaScript. Working on shipping features and fixing bugs under a deadline with my team was a great experience and it definitely helped to develop my communication and collaboration skills. I had the opportunity to work on real additions to the software, with all of the challenges that development really entails, but also with enough support from my coworkers to not feel overwhelmed and lost.
