Meet our 2016 Summer High School Students

Rhys and Noah
Rhys Rustad-Elliott and Noah Tajwar.

Why does Hootsuite offer Technical Summer Jobs to High School Students?

Because these kids are amazing. This blog post here details their accomplishments, our philosophy, and a request for more industry peers to help by starting a paid high school summer program: http://code.hootsuite.com/why-you-need-high-school-students/

How will Rhys and Noah contribute over the next two months?

Noah has joined our Android team, and Rhys has joined our Publishing team. Both will pair with a training guide, go through our onboarding program, participate in all aspects of software engineering as a team, work out loud, participate in Guild meetings, demonstrate their work at our Wednesday All Hands, write a blog post, and that’s just the beginning 🙂

What school do you go to, and what grade?

I just finished Grade 12 at Eric Hamber Secondary School.

What are your favourite technologies?

I’m a big fan of an open source project called Minetest. It’s a free and open source voxel game engine written in C++ with a Lua modding API that makes it simple to create mods and other content for the engine.

What project are you most proud of?

I’m quite proud of my Open Flood Android game. It was done as a school project in an IDS (Independent Studies) course and I think it turned out really well. It’s based off a popular game available for Android and iOS called Flood-it, but is fairly lightweight, requires no permissions, has no ads and is released under the MIT License. I released it on the Google Play store and F-droid, a repository for free and open source Android applications. In total, it managed to get about 1200 downloads on Google Play.

Why do you want to work at Hootsuite?

I’d eventually like to go into a career in software engineering, and this summer position will provide me with a whole world of valuable experience to help me out with that goal. Hootsuite’s offices are also an absolutely fantastic and enjoyable place to work.

Which team at Hootsuite will you be joining?

I will be working on the Publishing team.

What do you hope to accomplish in your summer job at Hootsuite?

I hope to gain experience working in software engineering, especially as part of a team. I also hope to improve my knowledge of both web development in general and the web development technologies used here at Hootsuite.

What school do you go to, and what grade?

I just completed Grade 12 at Riverside Secondary School

What are your favourite technologies?

I like working with the Android platform (Java), the Java desktop platform, and I also enjoy working with Arduino (C/C++).

What project are you most proud of?

The project that I’m the most proud of is the Riverside Rapids App that I developed for my school. I released the Android version in my Grade 11 year, and it has features including the school daily announcements, the school calendar, an up-to-date bell schedule, a school map, and the ability to connect to individual teacher’s SharePoint sites for specific courses. In Grade 12, I taught myself Swift and developed an iOS version (coming soon) of the app with a team of three other students from my school.

Why do you want to work at Hootsuite?

I worked at Hootsuite last summer and it was such a great experience I couldn’t wait to come back this year. It was a fantastic opportunity for me to learn a variety of new skills and I knew there would be plenty more for me to learn coming back. The culture and environment at Hootsuite was extremely enjoyable to work in and I was super excited to be a part of it once again.

Which team at Hootsuite will you be joining?

I’ll be joining the Android team at Hootsuite.

Our Android team builds our flagship Hootsuite Android app.

What do you hope to accomplish in your summer job at Hootsuite?

I hope to learn about working in a team environment for software development, and I hope to acquire a lot of knowledge and experiences developing and shipping a product to the real world, as well as develop my own programming/engineering skills.
